Codependency: Awareness to Action

A Six-Session Online Therapeutic Workshop with Dr Nicholas Jenner

You may already know that you are codependent.

You may recognise the people-pleasing, rescuing, overthinking, monitoring, difficulty saying no and tendency to put other people’s needs ahead of your own. You may understand where these patterns came from and even recognise them while they are happening.

And yet, knowing is not always enough to stop them.

Codependency: Awareness to Action is a six-session online therapeutic workshop designed to help you move beyond understanding your patterns and begin changing what you actually do when those patterns are activated.

The central idea behind the programme is simple:

Awareness creates a pause. The pause creates a choice. Repeated choices create a different way of relating.

From Understanding to Doing

Codependent behaviour is rarely simply a matter of making poor choices. Many of these patterns developed for good reasons. Pleasing, rescuing, fixing, monitoring and avoiding conflict may once have helped you maintain connection, reduce anxiety or feel safer within important relationships.

The difficulty comes when these responses continue automatically into adult life.

You may know that you do not need to fix another person’s mood, but still feel compelled to do it. You may know that you have the right to say no, yet experience enormous guilt when you do. You may recognise that someone else’s disappointment is theirs to manage, while your nervous system reacts as though the relationship itself is under threat.

This is the gap between awareness and action.

The purpose of this workshop is to work directly with that gap.

How the Programme Works

Rather than trying to change everything at once, you will choose one recurring codependent pattern from your own life and work with it throughout the six sessions.

We will examine what triggers the pattern, what happens emotionally and physically, which protective parts become involved, what you feel compelled to do and what happens afterwards.

From there, the work becomes increasingly practical.

You will learn how to create a pause between trigger and response, regulate the activation that makes old behaviour feel necessary, distinguish your responsibilities from those of another adult, establish clearer boundaries and tolerate the discomfort that often follows when you begin behaving differently.

The final part of the programme turns the attention back towards something that is frequently neglected in codependent relationships: your own life.

Your needs. Your preferences. Your values. Your individuality. Your direction.

This Workshop May Be Particularly Helpful If…

You repeatedly find yourself responsible for how other people feel.

You struggle to say no or worry excessively about disappointing someone.

You monitor another person’s mood, messages or behaviour and feel compelled to restore connection when something seems wrong.

You rescue, fix, pursue, appease or over-explain.

You understand your codependent patterns intellectually but find that insight disappears when you are emotionally triggered.

You have spent so much time concentrating on other people that you are no longer entirely sure what you want.

Or perhaps you have already done considerable work on yourself and are asking the important next question:

I understand why I do this. How do I actually stop doing it?

That is the question at the heart of Awareness to Action.

Six Connected Sessions

The programme consists of six 90-minute online group sessions:

Session 1 – Seeing the Pattern
Understanding the sequence behind one recurring codependent behaviour and identifying where choice can begin.

Session 2 – Triggers and the Nervous System
Recognising activation and learning to interrupt the automatic movement towards checking, rescuing, appeasing or fixing.

Session 3 – The Parts That Protect Me
Exploring the Pleaser, Rescuer, Fixer, Monitor and other protective parts, and developing greater adult Self-leadership.

Session 4 – Boundaries, Responsibility and Individuality
Understanding the difference between boundaries and control, separating your responsibilities from those of another adult and practising healthier limits.

Session 5 – Tolerating the Discomfort of Change
Learning to stay with the guilt, fear and anxiety that can arise when you stop behaving in familiar codependent ways.

Session 6 – Reclaiming the Self
Redirecting attention towards your own needs, values, preferences and purpose, and creating a practical 30-day plan for continuing the work.

This Is a Therapeutic Workshop, Not Simply a Course

The sessions combine therapeutic teaching with guided reflection, experiential exercises, group discussion and practical Action Practice between sessions.

You will not be expected to disclose anything you do not wish to share. The purpose of the group is to provide a structured and supportive environment in which understanding can gradually be translated into different behaviour.

The aim is not to become perfectly boundaried, completely independent or never triggered again.

It is to become increasingly able to notice what is happening, create enough space to make a conscious choice and act in a way that respects both your relationships and yourself.
